“He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.”

Proverbs 28:13 (NASB)

An old Scottish proverb tells us that “confession is good for the soul.” When we try to cover up our sins, we not only are forgetting the omniscience of God but we are failing to trust in His grace. Eventually, no matter how many people we fool on Earth, we will have to answer to God for those things which we tried to keep hidden. Covering up our sin not only affects us spiritually but it causes mental, physical and emotional fatigue. Thankfully there is another alternative. God’s word tells us that “he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion”. This is mirrored by God’s promise to us in 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”. Don’t cover your sin. Confess your sin and forsake it before God and you will find His compassion and forgiveness.

Questions for application…

What drives us to cover our sins?

Why is it impossible to truly hide our sins from God?

What is the promise for those who confess and turn from their sins?
