“The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him. Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

Mark 8:11-12 (NASB)

The Pharisees were the most outwardly righteous men of Christ’s day, but inwardly they were spiritually bankrupt. They were religious leaders and as Jesus’ following increased, the power of the Pharisees became threatened. At every turn they tried to argue with the teaching and impede the work of Christ. In Mark 8 we see one encounter when instead of asking for answers, the Pharisees asked for a sign from Jesus. This was another attempt to test Him and were rejected. God doesn’t “perform” on command. He does as He pleases, when He pleases. The fact is the Pharisees had enough evidence already to know that Jesus was God. There had been plenty of “signs”, from miracles to healing and even raising people from the dead. Like these Pharisees, many people today are also waiting on a sign from God. Meanwhile His wonders are displayed all throughout creation, His law is written on our consciences and His grace and love are displayed at every turn. God has nothing to prove. Be careful to avoid seeking the “sign” instead of the Savior.

Questions for application…

Why did Jesus not give the Pharisees a “sign” at their request?

Would these Pharisees have believed on Him even if He had given them a “sign”?
