“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 3:36 (NASB)

In our evangelism efforts we must always remember that saving faith is specific faith. It is not enough to believe in God in a general sense. If that were the case then there would be no need for evangelism at all because God has given general revelation to every person. It is also not enough to believe in God the Father. Judaism and Islam both claim a belief in the “God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” What sets Christianity apart from them is a specific faith in not only the Father but in God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We must believe that Christ is God in the flesh, that He lived a sinless life, that He died a substitutionary death on the cross, that He was buried and that He rose again on the 3rd day victorious over death, hell and the grave. We must believe that we are saved by Grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone for He alone is mighty to save and apart from Him there is no hope of redemption.

Questions for application…

Why is it not sufficient to simply believe in “god”?

What is the condition of those who do not specifically believe in Christ?
