“Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it.
When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.
For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.”
Proverbs 23:4-5 (NASB)
The Bible tells us that “the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil” (1 Tim 6:10) and yet we are tempted and encouraged by the world to to pursue it. As disciples of Christ, we are not to pursue anything or anyone but Him. We are to seek His Kingdom and His Righteousness and trust that God will provide for His children as He promises to do. (Matt. 6:33) Chasing after wealth is an empty pursuit. Either we will fail to achieve it and be disappointed or we will achieve it and find ourselves unsatisfied wanting more or anxious about losing what we have. We must work as unto the Lord not letting the desire for wealth drive us. Let us instead store up for ourselves eternal treasures where moth and rust will not destroy (Matt 6:20).
