“I relieved his shoulder of the burden,
His hands were freed from the basket.
“You called in trouble and I rescued you;
I answered you in the hiding place of thunder;
I proved you at the waters of Meribah.

Psalm 81:6-7 (NASB)

In Psalm 81, the Psalmist reminds the children of Israel of how God rescued them out of the bondage of slavery and delivered them from Pharoah’s hand. He reminds them that their hands were freed from the (brick) basket and that their physical burdens were eased because the people called on God and He answered them. Because God has been gracious enough to rescue them, the Israelites should praise God. All believers likewise have experienced the deliverance of God. We have been saved not from physical bondage but from spiritual bondage to the slavery of sin and the flesh. Through faith in Christ, we who were once dead in our sins have been delivered to eternal life. This is an even greater miracle than parting the Red sea or bringing down the walls of Jericho and we have experienced it first-hand. Therefore let us give worship to the One who has set us free !

Questions for application…

What reason was the Psalmist giving for the Israelites to praise God ?

What have Christians been delivered from ?
