“And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” ”
Matthew 4:19 (NASB)
In Matthew 4:19 we see the call of Christ to Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. It is a simple yet profound call. Christ calls them first and foremost to be followers. That is the essence of the Christian life, following and walking in obedience to Christ. The second part of the call is the phrase “I will make you”. This speaks to the transforming work of God in the life of a believer. We are not born with a predisposition to follow Christ but rather with a disobedient nature. Those who follow Christ are also being changed by the sanctifying work of the holy Spirit. Finally, the call is not only to follow Christ and to be transformed but also to be about the work of our Savior. Jesus calls us not only to be disciples but to follow His example and in making disciples as well (Mt. 28:18-20).
