Philippi was a Macedonian city but it was also a Roman colony. Although the residents were hundreds of miles from Rome itself, they were still considered not Macedonians but rather full Roman citizens. As Paul writes to the church there, He tells them that even though they were still on Earth, they actually were citizens of Heaven. The people of the city understood the concept that Paul was trying to teach them. We must also remember that our citizenship is not a product of where we are but rather who we are. As believers in Christ we have been adopted into His family and into His Kingdom. We are not of this world.
