“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

Psalm 118:1 (NASB)

Our God is Good. He is thoroughly Good in His character and attributes. His words and decrees are Good. He is Good to all people at all times, even to those who despise Him. He gives life to all men, He sustains all creation by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). In Him all things live and move and exist (Acts 17:28). His Goodness works in perfect harmony with His other attributes such as His Righteousness and His Jealousy. It is a false understanding of God’s Goodness that causes many sinners to disregard God’s attitude towards sin. Many believe that a “Good” God will simply overlook their sins, never to condemn them. The truth is that because God is Good, He must punish sin. A Good God will see to it that murderers and rapists and abusers and thieves and liars will be punished thoroughly. Yet because He is Good, God has also made a way for us to escape His wrath by sending His Son to die in our place.

Questions for application…

How can we know that God is Good to us in each situation?

How does God demonstrate His Goodness to all men?

How does God’s Goodness work in harmony with His Wrath?
