“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

James 4:7 (NASB)

As Martin Luther once said, the Devil is God’s Devil. Satan can do nothing to a Christian unless God in His Sovereignty allows it for our eventual good and for God’s ultimate Glory. Satan is a defeated foe. We have the promise that if we resist him, he will flee. But what does it mean to resist the Devil? The key is found in the first part of this verse: “Submit to God.” When we humble ourselves and hide ourselves in God’s Presence then we are safe from the enemy. Satan is not scared of us but he is terrified of God who lives in us in the Person of the Holy Spirit. Never try to engage the Devil in your own strength or wisdom. Run to God when under attack and He will defend you!

Questions for application…

What should we do when we are under spiritual attack?

Why should we not fight the Devil in our own strength?
