“Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Proverbs 27:1 (NASB)

The idea that we have complete control over our own futures is both appealing to our pride and false. God alone is sovereign, declaring the end from the beginning (Isa. 46:10) We make plans and promises yet we do not know what “a day may bring forth.” James reminds us that to boast about our future plans is not only foolish, but it is in fact sinful (James 4:13-17). Life is short and it is fragile. So then, how are we to live? We are to live in gratitude for each day that God gives us by taking up our cross and following Christ, focused not on the future but rather focused on glorifying Him in each moment of today.

Questions for application…

Why should we avoid boasting about the future?

How does the knowledge that God is in control of our future free us to serve Him today?
