“ The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And He knows those who take refuge in Him. ”
Nahum 1:7 (NASB)
The name Nahum means “comforter”. In Nahum 1:7 the prophet gives three comforting promises to us. First, Nahum tells something about the nature of God, that He is good. God is always good to His people at all times and in all circumstances. Secondly, Nahum tells us that not only is God good but that He is a “stronghold” for His people. We can run to Him in times of trouble and rest safely in His presence. Finally, Nahum tells us that not only is God good and not only is He a stronghold but that He “knows those who take refuge in Him.” God knows us. In fact He knows us better than we know ourselves. He sees our hearts and searches our thoughts. He is acquainted with our fears and our doubts and He loves us all the same. We can find comfort in Him.
