“The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”

Proverbs 13:3 (NASB)

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “loose lips sink ships.” Proverbs tells us that in fact those who cannot control their mouths “come to ruin”. Controlling our speech, speaking the truth in love and practicing appropriate silence are marks of Christian maturity. James tells us that the tongue is a dangerous fire (James 3:6) . We have the power to speak hurt or healing, comfort or condemnation, life or death. Therefore let us be swift to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19) so that we may be both blessed and a blessing to those around us.

Questions for application…

In what ways can our speech harm others or ourselves?

In what ways can we “guard” our conversations?
