“Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

Luke 3:21-22 (NASB)

Did you know that the word “trinity” isn’t in the Bible? Of course the word “Bible” isn’t in the Bible either. Even though the word “trinity” wasn’t used until the middle of the second century after Christ, the doctrine of the Trinity is clearly displayed throughout scripture. There is only One God but He exists eternally in three distinct Persons. Each Person of the trinity is fully God. It is impossible to picture with our limited human minds. However, the baptism of Christ allows us to get a glimpse of the triune God. In Luke’s account we see the second Person of the trinity, Jesus the Son. We also see the third Person of the Trinity as the Holy Spirit descends upon Christ. Finally we hear the first Person of the Trinity, God the Father as He speaks from Heaven.

Questions for application…

Why did the Father tell Christ that He was pleased with Him?

How is the Triune God of Christianity unique when compared to the gods of other religions?
