“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord;
He turns it wherever He wishes.”

Proverbs 21:1 (NASB)

Only God can change a heart and there is no heart which God cannot change. God hardened the heart of Pharaoh to resist the demands of Moses (Exodus 9:12). God also softens the hearts of the elect so that they will receive His gospel (Ezekiel 11:19). The Bible says that He takes out our heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26) This is something that is impossible with man. We can’t change our own disposition toward God nor can we change the disposition of others toward God. Evangelism is not about convincing people to change, even the Apostle Paul was unable to to do that (Acts 26:28). Changing people is God’s job. Our job is to be faithful to pray and to share and to love and to trust that His will will be done in the hearts of men.

Questions for application…

How has God “turned” your heart towards Him?

How does it encourage us to know that it is not our job to change hearts?

How does it encourage us to know that God can save whoever He wills to save?
