“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:6 (NASB)

In Philippians chapter 1 Paul reassures us that the work of salvation that God is performing in the life of every believer will eventually be completed. This is good news for those of us who have taken what feels like “one step forward and two steps back” at times in our Christian walk. Paul also reassures us by reminding us that salvation is not a work that we do but rather a work that God does. It is good to remember that “salvation is from the Lord” (Jonah 2:9). We are saved by God’s grace and not by our works (Eph. 2:8-9). Even though none of us will reach sinless perfection in this life, we can trust that God will perfect us in His perfect time and according to His perfect plan. God always finishes what He starts and because we know that He is faithful and true to His word we can be as Paul was, “confident.”

Questions for application…

What things cause us difficulty in trusting God’s promises?

How could Paul be confident of God’s faithfulness?
