“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. ”
Galatians 5:1 (NASB)
We are free to serve Christ because we have been delivered from the bondage of sin and from the obligations of the law (Rom 7:6). Despite this freedom, many believers voluntarily submit themselves to the yoke of religion. They trade in the freedom of relationship for the bondage of rules and regulations. When we try to earn or merit our salvation by religious duties or good deeds we negate the gospel of grace. The gospel sets us free not because we are obedient but rather because Christ was obedient in our place. When we embrace that truth it allows us to serve God not out of obligation but rather out of appreciation for our freedom in Christ.
Questions for application…
How do Christians subject themselves to a “yoke of slavery” ?
What happens when we serve God out of obligation rather than out of freedom ?
