“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:31-33 (NASB)

Christ’s statement is one of comfort and also one of conviction. It is comforting to know that God knows what we need and will take care of His children but it is challenging for us to let go of our independent mindset and trust Him to do what He promises. We can get so caught up in trying to make sure that our needs are met that we lose sight of our real mission. Our mission is to seek His kingdom, to advance His gospel, to pursue His righteousness and to rest on His promises.

Questions for application…

What is Christ referring to when He promises “all these things”? (Mt. 6:25-33)

Can you think of a time when God provided in a seemingly impossible situation?

How does God’s track record of faithfulness to us help us to rest in Him today?
