“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.'”

John 8:31-32 (NASB)

Jesus promises that those who are His true disciples will “know the truth and the truth will make you free.” First of all, Christ qualifies the promise to only “true disciples”. How do we know if we are true disciples ? Jesus tells us in verse 31 that those who “continue in My word” are true disciples. This indicates more than a simple profession of faith. It indicates that there is a lifelong devotion to abiding in Christ. Jesus promises that these true disciples will know the truth. What is this truth? Jesus Himself is the truth (John 14:6). Christ, the truth will then make His disciples free. What will they be free from? Those who know and abide in Christ will be free from sin.

Questions for application…

Why is it important that we can be freed from our sin?

Is there a consistent pattern of devotion to Christ in my life?
