“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3:30 (NASB)
In John Chapter 3, John the baptist was being questioned about the fact that Jesus had begun publicly baptizing and many were coming to Christ instead of to him. John could have become defensive or jealous but he understood that his own ministry wasn’t his at all and that “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.” John also understood that his purpose was not point people to himself but rather to point people to Christ. For a Christian this is our highest calling, not to exalt ourselves but to lift up Christ so that He might draw all men to Himself. Everything is through, for, and about Him, therefore He must increase and I must decrease.
Questions for application…
What causes us to want to draw attention to ourselves?
Why is it vital that we point people to Christ instead?
What are some ways that we can “decrease” so that Christ may “increase” in our lives?
