Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it

John 14:13-14 (NASB)

One of the most misunderstood promises in scripture is the promise of Jesus in John 14:13-14. A cursory reading of the passage would seem to indicate that we only need to “tack” the name of Jesus onto the end of our requests and we will be guaranteed to receive them. This is not what Christ was getting at however. The key to understanding this scripture is to understand the motive of God as He answers prayer. Jesus reveals that motive to us in verse 13 : “so that the Father may be glorified in the Son”. This is why God answers each prayer in the way that He does, so that He may bring the maximum glory to Himself. To have our prayers answered according to this promise, we must identify ourselves not only with the name of Christ but also with the desire of Christ to glorify the Father. That is what “asking in Jesus’ name” truly means.

Questions for application…

What does it mean to ask in Jesus’ name ?

What the primary goal of God in answering prayer ?
