“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NASB)
Many times in scripture God promises peace to His people. Psalms tells us that God “speaks Peace to His people” (Psalm 85:8). Jesus tells His disciples that He is leaving His peace with them (John 14:27). Paul prays often that the Lord will grant peace to His church. How then do we find peace in a troubling situation? How do we keep from becoming “anxious” as we are encouraged to do here? The answer is both simple and profound. God’s word tells us that peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Jesus tells us that those who abide in Him will bear this and other spiritual fruit (John 15:5). Peace comes from being in the presence of Christ. This is why Paul encourages us to “by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Praying is the purest form of abiding in Christ. Hiding His word in our hearts and hiding ourselves in His presence will bring us the peace that He has promised.
