“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

John 15:4-5 (NASB)

The most important thing for a believer isn’t church attendance, giving or even sharing our faith. The most important thing that a believer is to do is to abide in the presence of Christ; to speak to Him in prayer to hear Him from His word. Often the mistake we make is trying to do things FOR God in our own strength. This never bears spiritual fruit. In fact Christ tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing. Not some, not a little bit, we can do no thing apart from Him. However, if we first abide in Him then we have His promise that we will bear much fruit. He is the vine, we are the branches. All that we need to live, grow and bear fruit comes from our intimate connection to Him.

Questions for application…

What is involved in abiding in Christ?

What will happen to a branch that is cut off from its connection to the vine?
