The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. ”

Ezekiel 18:20 (NASB)

God is Righteous and Fair in His judgment of men. Generational sins are only held against the sons who repeat the sinful actions of their fathers. God will not judge us based on the wickedness or righteousness of others but rather on our own merits. The good news for men is that each one of us will only be accountable for our own sins. The bad news is that we are individually responsible for our sins before God. There are no excuses or shifting of blame onto others. Therefore we must each repent and flee to the Cross wherein we find the righteousness that will save us from the spiritual death that each of us deserve.

Questions for application…

How is God’s fairness in judgment displayed in this verse ?

What is the consequence for our individual sin ?
